Frequently Asked QuestionsIf your child is about to become a wrestler and this is your first real experience with the sport, you will want to know what is happening as you watch from the bleachers, what to expect as the match progresses, and how to react when your child comes off the mat. This section provides this information and more and is the first step toward maximizing the benefit your child may experience as they explore this new and exciting sport.

Does my child need to have prior experience?
No. We take wrestlers of all ages and abilities. We cater to the new student as well as the athlete preparing for national-level competitions. We want the sport to be fun or challenging, depending on the commitment level of the athlete.
Does my ATHLETE need to live in the West Ottawa School District?
No, any child from any school district may join us. In the past, we have had wrestlers from Holland, Allegan, Fennville, Hamilton, Zeeland, Hudsonville, Grand Haven, and even some home-school students.
What should my wrestler bring?
Here is a shortlist of items that we ask our athletes to bring:
- Workout shirt and shorts
- Wrestling shoes or clean tennis shoes
- Mouthguard (if an athlete has braces)
- Water Bottle
What do they do?
Workouts will vary for each day and each age group. However, the basic philosophy is to keep wrestling fun for our younger athletes and teach them basic positions: games, conditioning, live situations, and a good portion of agility drills. We have modeled our youth program on 2012 Olympian Jake Herbert's Base Wrestling system. You can read more about it HERE.
What is the Time commitment?
Time is a valuable resource for everyone. We believe that you get what you put in. But we also appreciate that everyone has busy lives that can't always commit to all of our training sessions and other opportunities. We work with families that have other obligations in their busy schedules. If an athlete can't make each practice, please don't let that push you away from the program.
Injury statistics
All sports have injuries. Wrestling is no exception. However, due to the nature of the environment, athletes and coaches can prevent many serious injuries. Here is a STUDY done in 2008 that highlights common ailments with wrestlers of all ages.
Cost of gear?
We try to keep costs low for athletes. Gear is no exception. Here is a breakdown of OPTIONAL gear you may wish to purchase:
- Singlet 40.00-70.00
- Wrestling Shoes 30.00-100.00
- Headgear: 20.00-40.00
- Competition Card (MYWAY) 40.00
What will my Child Gain from the sport?
This is a question that could be answered in an entire book. But if we were to pull away the the basic benefits from the sport they would be:
.
- Personal Growth & Development
- Discipline
- Mental Toughness
- Sportsmanship
- Competitiveness
